New GM at Jamaica Mortgage Bank
Courtney Wynter took over as general manager of Jamaica Mortgage Bank (JMB) on January 6, filling the vacancy created by the departure of Patrick Thelwell last October.
Wynter was chief financial officer for COK Sodality Co-operative Credit Union prior to his appointment.
Before joining COK, he served as consulting general manager for two subsidiaries of the Victoria Mutual Group, and as vice-president of finance at Cable & Wireless Jamaica, now trading as LIME Jamaica. He currently sits on the Board of Centralised Strategic Services Limited, a subsidiary of the Jamaica Co-operative Credit Union League.
Wynter was educated at City University of New York, where he gained a bachelor's degree in accounting, and he holds an MBA in international finance from St John's University, New York. He is also a graduate of the Wharton Advanced Management Program for executives.
"Many developed countries such as the USA and Canada have successfully used their housing policy to drive economic development and growth," Wynter said on Wednesday. The Jamaica Mortgage Bank's mandate continues to be to facilitate housing solutions and commercial development as a key component for economic growth, and to play its part in achieving Jamaica's 2030 vision 'as a preferred place to live', he said.
The new head is expected to press ahead with longstanding plans by the JMB to inject life into the secondary mortgage market and provide cheaper financing options for first-time homebuyers.
The Jamaica Mortgage Bank is a state-owned institution. It was established in 1971 as a private limited company under the Companies Act of 1965 but was later converted to a statutory corporation through an act of Parliament.
