Presented since 1979, The Gleaner's Honour Awards recognises the initiative, accomplishment and courage of individuals and organisations that have contributed significantly to improving Jamaica's quality of life, at any time in the preceding 12 months, or is likely to bring about such a change in the immediate future.

Through its Selection Committee, headed by Professor Gerald Lalor, OJ, the company has consistently identified Jamaicans and Jamaican organisations that have been supporting important areas of development through their direct involvement.

invaluable service

It is hoped that this encourages even more persons and organisations to continue to make their silent contributions as the spin-offs of these efforts are invaluable.

Said Professor Lalor, "It is not the easiest of tasks to select the winners each year because Jamaica is full of brilliant examples of excellence and sterling contribution. At the end of these sessions, however, we agree on those who we have identified as representing the best of what Jamaica has to offer."

The categories in which awards are presented are:

Arts and Culture Public Service

Sports Education

Science and Technology

Voluntary Service

Entertainment

Health and Wellness

Business

The overall winner, to be announced at the gala event will join the company of past recipients such as Digicel, Usain Bolt, Prof Ralston 'Rex' Nettleford, The Jamaica Library Service, and Commissioner Owen Ellington.

The managing director of The Gleaner Company, Christopher Barnes, noted that, "Our selection of categories in these Honour Awards represents the broadest cross section of activity in Jamaican life. We recognise winners and present special awards in these categories to reinforce the point that we all have our own areas of talent, passion and excellence that are equally important to the national effort."

The category winners in this year's programme will be fêted at several category luncheons at The Gleaner Company's corporate offices prior to the Gala Awards Luncheon on January 30.
