SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth:

LONG-SERVING AND committed teachers, an excellent teaching programme, and a child-friendly environment are some of the things that have contributed to the success of the Santa Cruz Preparatory School. So says the principal, Janet Robinson.

Robinson said the school, which was founded in 1975 by Merville Rowe and Hyacinth Stubbs, has consistently performed well in the student-placement examination it was known as the Common Entrance Exams until it became the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT).

Last year, the school attained an average of 343, compared to the national GSAT average of 258.

"To me, when I break it down, committed teachers, [an] excellent programme, re-sources, [and a] child-friendly environment help us a lot. The staff turnover here is not a rapid [one], so you have long-standing teachers.

"We cater to the individual needs of the children, and that's what helps. We try to provide resources that will help the children to learn," the principal said.

She said in addition to ensuring they had the necessary resources for learning, the teachers ensured that the students understood the concepts taught .
