 ANNOTTO Bay, St Mary:

FOR THE last 10 years, Velda Thomas has been the principal at Gospel Chapel Preparatory School in Annotto Bay, St Mary.

Despite being located in one of the parish's most economically deprived areas, the school has consistently delivered impressive Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) results in recent years.

Thomas believes Gospel Chapel's accomplishments are the result of first-class teaching methods, relatively small class sizes, and a strong focus on traditional Christian values.

She told The Gleaner: "I think we have been successful because our teachers are very committed and everyone works as a team.

"We assess each student's weak points from as early as grade one and track them all the way up to grade six. At each grade level, wherever a weakness is identified in a particular subject, we encourage our teachers to gear their lesson and action plans towards meeting those needs."

Thomas added: "Last year, we got a Government scholarship for the girl with the highest GSAT average in St Mary to attend Westwood High School.

"I really believe prayer has played an integral part in what has been achieved over the years, and we really give God thanks for the results we have had."
