Rear Admiral Peter Brady, director general of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, has been reappointed to the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University (WMU) with effect from March 2014 for a further two-year period. He was first appointed to the board in 2008.

The WMU, located in Malmo, Sweden, is a postgraduate maritime university founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the specialised agency of the United Nations with responsibility for regulating the safety and security of international shipping and the prevention of pollution by ships.

WMU's intent is to further enhance the objectives and goals of IMO and IMO member states around the world, particularly capacity building for developing countries, through maritime education and training and research activities.

The university is accountable to the IMO secretary-general, council, and assembly, and to an international board of governors composed of representatives of various countries, the international shipping industry, and academia. It offers PhD, graduate degrees, and professional development courses in various maritime-related disciplines.

Jamaica and the Caribbean have benefited from tertiary training offered by the WMU, with 28 Jamaican graduates, so far, most still serving in the public service, while some others are working in the private sector.
