Large crowd expected for City clash, drifting

The Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) calls today's event at Dover Raceway the Drift Invasion and Speed race meet. However, Doug 'Hollywood' Gore describes it as "the clash of Team MoBay versus the Total Boys of Kingston".

After carefully studying how David Summerbell and his Total teammates came to dominate the last race meet, Gore believes Team MoBay is strategically poised to upset the apple cart. However, unlike previous years when motor racing fans looked forward to the customary clash between Gore and Summerbell, this time around, the big encounter will be between Gore and Total's Kyle Gregg in the Modified Production II class.

"It will be the clash of the Hondas," stated Gore, who will be driving Dean Corrodus' Honda Civic. The race will also feature Natasha Chang, who is rated among the top female circuit racers in the Caribbean.

Gore's ultimate aim is to beat Gregg into second place. "The Total Team will not dominate this weekend," chuckled Gore.

Analysing the Modified Production III class Gore pointed to Team MoBay's Oliver Townsend, whose task is to upstage the 2013 champion driver, Andre Anderson of the Total camp.

In response, Summerbell remarked, "Hollywood is Hollywood, and I am glad that he is in that spirit, but he has his hands full with Gregg (Kyle) in his class." A spirited Summerbell said he has all confidence in Team Total. The man who established a new lap record at the last race meet stressed that because of a gearbox problem, he will be a bit slower this meet.

With the five drift cars from the United States in action, along with the many clashes among rival drivers, president of the JRDC, Charles Chen, anticipates non-stop action.

"We are expecting about 15,000 patrons," said Chen, who further stated that hundreds of persons have expressed deep interest in the drift cars.

The drift drivers are Harri Tervola, Bill Stenger, Alberto Abalos, Ryan and Joshua Kaufman. All from the US, the drivers arrived in Jamaica directly from Curaço. Prior to that, they were in Puerto Rico and Aruba.

Together, they boast eight years of drifting in several countries. The cars they drive each boasts between 350 and 650 horsepower and include a Toyota Corolla.

Called Ter-Tech, the group intends to deliver high-energy sideways driving for the enjoyment of the spectators. They plan to drift around the entire track, including the corners, and say they will be in action even if it rains.
