The sign at the entrance still reads, "The Ward Theatre is temporarily closed to the public", but last Sunday, the historic theatre opened its doors for the first time in years to host a benefit concert.

Put on in collaboration with Kingston on the Edge (KOTE), the concert was in an effort to restore the theatre to its former glory.

Sponsored by Wisynco, Atlas Security and the Jamaica National Foundation, the concert saw more than 47 persons participating in song, dance, and theatre. Though off to a late start, the event delivered on its promise of classic entertainment from start to finish.

The band from the Apha Boys' School opened with instrumental versions of Justin Hinds' Carry Go Bring Come and Lean on Me before the Moder-Ashbourne Gang took to the stage. The musical family thrilled the audience with a number of classic selections, but it was their rendition of Can't Help Falling in Love with You that got the most response from the audience. Perhaps, it was the introduction to the song that had guests captivated, as the performers professed their love for the Ward, a love that many patrons shared.

Another notable performance came from Mikel Gordon, who was not billed for the show, but made an appearance as a special treat from the organisers. His Mozart performance was well received.

Jean Small, Andrew Brodber, M Balla, Fabian Thomas, and Randy McLaren all put in spectacular performances as theatre and poetry took the spotlight in the second segment of the concert.

Venezuelan singer Luis Felipe Bellorin provided entertainment for the Spanish guests, while members of the NDTC and Bulletproof Dancers thrilled with a choreographed dance piece titled Relationships.

Third World's Cat Coore and Robbie Lyn also put in a great performance. However, the evening wasn't without a few hiccups. No-Maddz, who were scheduled to close the show, were unable to make an appearance due to their involvement in a motor-vehicle accident.

Emcee and co-organiser for the event, Enola Williams, said the concert marked the beginning of great things to come as they look forward to hosting more events at the Ward in the future.
