The police in St. Lucia are reporting a reduction in murders and sexual offences in 2007 compared with the following years.

A report made available to the media indicates that the number of murders decreased from 39 in 2006 to 26 last year, while sexual offences dropped from 230 in 2006 to 227 last year.

Assistant Commissioner of police with responsibility for crime, Vernon Francois said the public and law enforcement officers, have played a significant role in bringing about improvements in the crime situation.

He said officers from Britain were brought to St. Lucia two years ago, to help the local police deal with the crime problem.

He said there is still work to be done to reduce the cases of burglary and robbery, which escalated from 375 in 2006 to 380 in 2007.

He said plans to organise neighbourhood watches and business consultations are currently underway, as strategies to curb crime.
