The sequel to the 2007 hit film starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox took £8.35m, the biggest opening for a film so far this year, according to a report on news.bbc.co.uk.

It easily beat Terminator Salvation, which took £6.94m earlier this month.

The figure is just shy of The Dark Knight\'s takings of £8.6m in its debut weekend last year.

Surprise hit comedy The Hangover made way for the summer blockbuster at number two but still had a strong weekend, taking £2.25m in box office receipts.

The rest of the top 10 provided little competition for the top two films.

Holding steady at three was Ben Stiller film Night At The Museum 2 with £817,000, taking its five-week total to £18.3m.

Terminator Salvation fell two places to four after taking £804,000 in its third week of release.

Tom Hanks film Angels and Demons completed the top five.
