There is uncertainly this afternoon about the possible impact of the impending change in the leadership of the communist state of Cuba.

The ailing President Fidel Castro announced that he would be stepping down after 49 years.

The National Assembly is expected to nominate his 76 year old brother, and designated successor Raul Castro to lead the Cuban people.

Almost 5 decades after he seized power in an armed revolution, Fidel Castro announced his resignation as president and commander in chief.

He said he would not seek a new presidential term when the National Assembly meets on February 24.

Former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga said while Mr. Castro left a record of an excellent social sector in terms of health and education, he has also registered some unfavourable records.

In July 2006, Fidel Castro transferred power to his brother Raul Castro after he became ill.

Former Prime Minister, PJ Patterson described Mr. Castro as a towering political figure of this generation.

Mr. Patterson who is expected to release a full statement on the development today, also said Mr. Castro has earned the right to retire in his closing years.
