The St. Kitts and Nevis Parliament is debating a bill to increase sentences for violent crime.

The government said the sentence for gun crimes where there is intent to maim, disfigure or disable would be doubled to 20 years.

The penalty for attempted murder by poisoning or other destructive means is expected to move from 10 to 25 years in jail.

The sentence for any person convicted of inflicting bodily harm with or without a weapon is also being raised from two to seven years.
