The opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) decided not to contest the by-election to choose a candidate to fill the seat left vacant following the death of Agriculture Minister, Charlesworth Samuel in January.

The governing United Progressive Party (UPP) has nominated former Senator, Chester Hughes to contest the March 27 by-election.

The Organisation for National Development Party has put forward attorney Ralph Francis as its candidate, while Steve Williams will contest the seat for the Progressive Youth Movement.

ALP chairman, Gaston Browne said his party’s decision to stay out of the race is a strategic move to save on its financial resources for the general elections, which are constitutionally due within a year.
