More flooding in Guyana

There are fears of further flooding in Guyana following last week’s high sea swells.

Heavy waves caused by a low-pressure system, affected several Caribbean countries and left many areas under water.

Residents along Guyana’s east coast Demerara fear that sections of the already fragile sea defence may collapse, as the eastern base and shoulder on which the sea wall rests has eroded.

The authorities in Guyana have converted a nearby school into a shelter, to accommodate people who live in low-lying areas that have been inundated by floodwaters.

The government has also been spearheading emergency works in the area.
