Fugitive on rape charges held

An international fugitive who was being sought on rape charges has been held in the United States.



Amaro Rodrigues, 54, was held in Miami while returning home from vacation in Barbados, when authorities identified him as a fugitive from France.



The authorities notified the United States Department of State that Mr. Rodrigues would be travelling through the US to return home.



US Customs and Border Protection officers in Miami held him.



Mr. Rodrigues was wanted for rape and attempted rape.



He returned to France to face the charges in keeping with a 1996 Bilateral Extradition Treaty between the US and France.
