A World Bank team arrives in Jamaica today for discussions on Jamaica’s plans to develop a transshipment hub and logistics centre.

The talks will extend over four days to February 8.

Minister of Industry Investment and Commerce, Anthony Hylton, said the World Bank is weighing technical assistance and financing for the project through its affiliate, the International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The European Union, Hylton said, had also met with ministry officials last week to discuss a possible role in the unfolding project.

Meantime, Hylton has appointed Dr Eric Deans to head the logistics hub implementation unit within the ministry.

Deans told Gleaner Business that the next step for the unit was the development of a master plan in collaboration with stakeholders for execution of all projects.

No timeline for completion was proposed, however, Hylton said in mid-January during a two day retreat on the logistics hub, that April 2015 is a major milestone aligning with the completion of the Panama Canal expansion project.
