JPS wins best safety performance award

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has been selected by the Caribbean Electric Utility Service Corporation (CARILEC) as the utility with the best safety performance in the region for 2012.



The announcement was made at a recently concluded CARILEC conference in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the company said in a statement.



“This award for best safety performance is an indication that our efforts to achieve operational excellence are producing results,” said Kelly Tomblin, JPS President and Chief Executive Officer.



“Safety is one of the leading indicators of employee focus and engagement on the job, and is an area that we must get right as we work to improve our operations and service to customers,” she said.



“I am very proud of the hard work being done by employees to reduce the number of accidents and safety breaches across the organization. We will definitely continue to build on this performance,” Tomblin added.



CARILEC is an association of electric utilities, suppliers, manufacturers and other stakeholders operating in the electricity industry in the Caribbean.



For the second year, the Association presented benchmarking awards to encourage regional utilities to improve their efficiency, reliability, cost-effectiveness and productivity as part of efforts to achieve regional best practice that mirrors international industry standards, the JPS said.



This year, Bermuda Electric Lighting Company Limited emerged the overall best performing utility.



Belize Electric Limited was the recipient of the best performance in generation services award, and Caribbean Utilities Company Limited of the Cayman Islands picked up the award for best Performance in transmission and distribution.
