UK clampdown on speeders

The government in the United Kingdom says it will be implementing several measures to clamp down on drivers in breach of road rules.

It says drivers caught breaking the speed limit by more than 20 miles per hour could face a six-point penalty under the new proposals.

The government\'s consultation paper on road safety also says motorists found speeding over 20 miles per hour on more than one occasion could be automatically banned from driving.

The document also suggests creating formal drug-drive limits in a bid to make prosecutions easier to achieve.

However, ministers say any changes in the drink-drive limit would need solid evidence of the safety benefits.

Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick says almost 3 thousand persons died and 30 thousand were injured on British roads last year.
