Britain to take Guantanamo Bay prisoners

Britain is being urged to take some Guantanamo Bay inmates so that the United States can close the Cuban detention camp.

President-elect Obama has indicated that he wants the Guantanamo camp to be closed within two years.

According to former attorney general Lord Goldsmith, the policy of detaining people suspected of links to terrorism without trial at Guantanamo was misguided.

He says the remaining 250 detainees should be sorted into groups representing those who should face trial and those who should be returned to their countries.

Goldsmith says those who could not be returned home for fear of persecution should be sent either to the US or to other countries.

About 50 of the remaining inmates have reportedly been cleared for release.
