Jagdeo orders investigation into missing guns

The president of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo believes the killing of 11 persons last weekend, may have been an attempt to divert attention from a major weapons investigation being undertaken.



The investigation relates to the disappearance of 200 guns that belonged to the Guyana Defense Force.



The weapons were issued to the Ministry of National Development (MND) in the 1970s, but were never returned to the Defense Force.



Mr. Jagdeo ordered an investigation to determine how many of the guns were not returned.



It has been reported that two of three weapons recovered from criminals in Mahaica belonged to the army.



Mr. Jagdeo said the government has no intention of halting the investigations into the disappearance of the guns.



Gunmen in Lusignan killed 11 persons early on Saturday.



The police believe Guyana’s most-wanted gang boss organised the attack.
