The Trinidad and Tobago government said it intends to re-employ most of the workers whose jobs will be lost when the Revenue Authority of Trinidad and Tobago is formed.

About 2 175 people are to lose their jobs.

Junior Finance Minister Mariano Browne said the government plans on placing the workers from the Inland Revenue Department and the Customs and Excise Division into jobs in the new institution.

But he said not all the existing workers will be employed at the new authority.

Mr Brown said employees would have the opportunity to accept the Voluntary Separation Programme or apply for other available jobs in the public sector.

He said the specifications for the different job positions at the new authority are now being developed.

The Public Service Association has warned of industrial action to pressure the government to reverse its decision to establish the Revenue Authority.
