The acting chief financial officer of struggling US mortgage giant Freddie Mac has reportedly committed suicide.

The police say 41-year-old David Kellermann was found dead at his house about 13 miles west of Washington DC.

He was reportedly found hanging in his basement.

Kellermann became Freddie Mac’s chief financial officer in September after working for the company for 16 years.

The company was bailed out by the US government last year.

Last month Freddie Mac revealed a loss of 50 point 1 billion dollars for 2008, and said it planned to ask the US government for another 31 billion dollars in aid.
