Opposition parliamentarians boycott House

Opposition legislators in Antigua this morning boycotted the ceremonial opening of the new session of Parliament following the March 12 general election.

The parliamentarians of the Antigua Labour Party (ALP) are said to have stayed away in protest against what they describe as the blatantly partisan and political behaviour of the Governor-General Dame Louise Lake-Tack.

The party says it objects to the appointment of Dame Louis as Governor-General because she was a confessed campaign contributor to the United Progressive Party (UPP).

They say she also appeared frequently on the UPP’s political platform in the 2004 general election.

The ALP is adamant that the Governor General is expected to be impartial, capable of making non-partisan decisions in accordance with the Constitution.

It’s worried that the Governor General will not be able to do that.

The ALP is also calling for fresh general elections in the country, contending that the polls last month were riddled with abuses.
