A search is now on for persons who went missing after a series of earthquakes hit the Great Lakes area of Rwanda and the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo yesterday.

At least 40 persons have been confirmed dead.

Earthquake officials said the quakes had magnitudes of 6.5 on the Richter scale.

The Mayor of Bukava said aftershocks were felt last night, but there have been no new victims.

Reports say more than 300 persons were injured by the tremors.
