Thousands of people have fled the Chad capital, N’Djamena after two days of fierce fighting between the government and rebel forces in the city.

Aid workers report that fighting continues outside the city while dead bodies litter the streets.

The government said it has forced the rebels out of the city, but the rebels say they withdrew to give civilians the chance to evacuate.

The UN Security Council has urged member states to help the government.

France\'s UN Ambassador, Jean Maurice Ripert said it was too early to say whether France would provide military support to the government.

Local officials have told the UN refugee agency that thousands of people were crossing the border town of Kousseri.
