The head of the Law Association of Trinidad and Tobago is supporting calls for President George Maxwell Richards to step down over the recent Integrity Commission fiasco.

Earlier, Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday also called for President Richards to step down, saying the country’s head of state, who is currently away on vacation and who is due to return on May 25, had found himself in an untenable position.

Since his appointment of the Integrity Commission last month, there have been resignations over one issue or another, with the local media reporting that the last remaining member of the five-member team had resigned.

Gladys Gafoor reportedly met with Acting President Danny Montano and handed in her resignation, clearing the way for the President to make new appointments.

The first to go was former Appeal Court judge Zainool Hosein who resigned a few hours after his appointment, claiming that the President had reneged on his promise to make him Deputy Chairman.
