New UK immigration system could discriminate against developing nations

The British government is set to introduce a new points based immigration system on February 29.

This would facilitate some qualified professionals from non-European countries including the Caribbean to gain citizenship.

The skilled migrants programme allocates points to applicants, based on their education and the demand for their skill in the UK.

It is considered to be vital for Britain to maintain global leadership in the fields of finance, business and technological innovation by attracting the most talented people.

Some critics in the Commonwealth argued that the system is unfair, as Britain is willing to take only the best professionals.

They said this could further restrict the growth of developing countries.
