The main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) in Belize were declared the winner in the country’s General Elections yesterday.

Preliminary results showed the Dean Barrow led UDP winning 25 of the 31 parliamentary seats, with the remaining six going to the incumbent People\'s United Party (PUP) led by Prime Minister, Said Musa.

Barrow, a 56 year old lawyer led the UDP into the general elections for the third time.

The party was defeated in the 1998 elections and again in 2003.

Prime Minister, Musa managed to stave off a huge challenge for his Fort George, Belize City seat, from the UDP candidate, Dr. George Gough, a newcomer to politics.

Musa, a 63 year old lawyer, first came to power in 1998. He was seeking a third term as Prime Minister.
