100 performers for Labour Day Concert

A Labour Day concert, dubbed ‘Praise Vibes on the Waterfront’, will be held at the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) West Car Park, Orange Street, downtown Kingston, on Monday, May 25, to bring a close to this year’s Labour Day activities.



The event is being held under the theme: ‘Ketch the Vibes: Volunteerism, Intervention, Beautification, Empowerment for Success’. It will be hosted by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), in collaboration with the UDC and Jambiz International Limited.



Chairman of the committee, Lenford Salmon, said about 14 artistes and gospel groups, including The Tivoli Dancers, DJ Nicholas, Four the Hard Way, Carlene Davis and Goddy Goddy, have been invited to participate in the event. He noted that about 100 performers will be at the function.



He said the concert will begin with the Vauxhall High School Choir singing the National Anthem at 6:30 and ends at approximately 10 p.m. The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) will be providing extra buses to transport persons after the show.



According to Mr. Salmon, about 10,000 persons are expected to attend the event. “The feedback we are getting is that it could be more than that,” he added. He said the Ministry of Health and Environment will be asked to set up a first aid post for the general public, and one backstage for the performers, to deal with any medical emergencies.

Mr. Salmon said that vendors would not be allowed to enter the car park, but would be able to set up outside the fence.



Superintendant Derrick Knight, in charge of the Area Four Police Division, said that adequate police personnel as well as private security workers would be deployed to ensure the safety of persons attending the function. He pointed out that after the concert, traffic cops would be patrolling the streets to ensure that persons get home safely.
