East Timor President hospitalised

President of East Timor, Jose Ramos-Horta, remains hospitalised in critical condition after being shot by rebel soldiers yesterday morning.



The police said Mr. Ramos Horta was shot as two cars drove past his house on the outskirts of the capital, Dili. He received gun wounds to the stomach and chest.



Mr. Ramos-Horta was reportedly taken to the Australian military hospital in Dili, where he was stabilised.



Officials said he was later airlifted to Darwin, Australia, for further treatment.

Prime Minister, Xanana Gusmao declared a 48-hour state of emergency, including a nighttime curfew.
