The United Nations and the Dominican Republic have deployed troops to guard against drugs and gun smuggling across the Dominican Republic and Haitian border.

Officials said the troops have been specially trained for their duties and are instructed to patrol and secure the border.

According to the officials, the soldiers will also help to reduce the number of illegal immigrants, who pass through the region.

The United Nations soldiers are from various Caribbean countries and are part of the United Nations Stabilisation Mission stationed in Haiti.
