The parents of Yasheka Mangaroo are still beaming from the outstanding performance of their daughter in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC).

Yasheka, of Titchfield High in Portland, achieved grade ones in mathematics, English, chemistry, physics, biology, geography, Spanish, principles of business, social studies and information technology, totalling 11 subjects after gaining a grade-two in accounts at grade 10.

Yasheka's parents, Linda and Ian Mangaroo, told The Gleaner the results came as no surprise to them as she has been a hard worker, copping a number of awards for top achievements at her school.

"We had to sit up with her to make sure that she would complete her assignments because I didn't want her to feel alone on the journey," her father said. "Sometimes we even do the chores that she would have done in order for her to stick to the books."

Expected work to pay off

An elated Yasheka said she was expecting her hard work to pay off.

"I feel good to know that I am successful after the hard work. I feel like a lot of the sacrifices that I have made were worth it," she boasted.

She said it wasn't an easy road for her but she wanted to be successful and so she didn't mind.

"The study period was a tough one. It was a lot of work and so it meant a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of group work, so I am very happy," she said.

Yasheka said she intends to go on to sixth form before launching a career in the field of science.

Other activities

A well-rounded individual, Yasheka was a member of the 4-H, Camera, Science and Interact clubs and also a prefect at her school.

She said her faith in God and her commitment to hard work, her family, teachers and friends were instrumental in her getting excellent grades.

Yasheka also offered special thanks to Horlicks which has helped her over the years to fund her studies at high school.

Mr Mangaroo encouraged other parents to always stand by their children when they are doing examinations and they will reap success.

"They should be 100 per cent behind their children so that they could be successful in their academic goals," he advised.
