Customs to introduce new computerised system

Published:Thursday | February 20, 2014 | 12:00 AM

The Customs Department, now known as the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA), will introduce a computerised customs management system to address deficiencies highlighted by the Auditor General's Department last year.

The JCA has advertised for a National Project Director, among other posts, for the implementation of the Automated System for Customs Data or ASYCUDA project, but has not responded to Gleaner Business requests for information on the project.

The AG report had pointed to the absence of valid price-reference data for most imported products and a uniform research methodology for the valuations done by Customs officers, among other operational weaknesses at the JCA.

Customs was changed to an executive agency, which gives it more autonomy over its operations.
