16 Chinese policemen have been killed and 16 others injured in an attack on a border post in the restive Muslim region of Xinjiang.

Two attackers reportedly drove up to the post in a garbage truck and threw two grenades, before moving in to attack the policemen with knives.

14 policemen were said to have died at the scene and two on the way to hospital.

Both attackers were reportedly captured during a raid near the city of Kashgar.

The attack comes four days before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing.
