Tropical Storm Fay has made landfall in the US state of Florida for the third time in four days.

The storm has claimed more than 20 lives since it was formed in the Atlantic Ocean last week.

Fay has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometres per hour and has dropped more than 50 centimetres of rain over several parts of central Florida.

The storm also caused heavy flooding and left thousands without power.

Forecasters say it is expected to move through north Florida and then into Alabama in the coming days.
