Petersfield inch closer to inter-zone berth

Akeem Whyte hit a brace for Petersfield High in their 3-1 daCosta Cup Group D top-of-the-table clash against Godfrey Stewart High yesterday to go joint first on 13 points with a game in hand over their rivals.

According to assistant coach Dwayne Forrester, Petersfield needed to win to send a message to their rivals.

"This is a very important three points and I think we deserved it because of how we played here today," Forrester told The Sunday Gleaner.

"With a game in hand over them, we are closer to one of our objectives and that is to win this group," he said.

Much more industrious on the slippery surface, Petersfield grabbed the early lead from a Clive Selbourne's looping header in the sixth minute.

Godfrey Stewart then sparked to life in search of the equaliser and came close twice before finally doing so.

Twenty-five minutes into the match, Malik Quarrie's low effort slid along the wet surface past Akeem Brown into the Petersfield goal.

Whyte scored his first goal from the penalty spot in the 34th minute. He was brought down after a storming run inside the Godfrey Stewart 18-yard box.

Thirteen minutes after the half-time break Whyte sent his team further ahead with a fabulous free kick from 23 yards out.

The home team gave all they had and should have pulled another goal back but were unlucky a shot hit the upright before being cleared by the Petersfield defence.

Meanwhile, runaway Group A leaders Cornwall College turned back St James High 4-1 at Jarrett Park. It was Cornwall's second straight win over the Theodore Whitmore-coached St James. The victory moved Cornwall to 18 points while St James have stalled on seven, clearing the way for Green Pond High (10) to sneak into the inter-zone round.

Champions STETHS waltzed past Maggotty High 2-0 in Group E, while Lacovia whipped Newell 4-1.
