Dalley to work with JFJ to restore charity status

The finance ministry is to work with lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) to restore the organisation’s charity status.

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Horace Dalley, reportedly made the disclosure in an interview with JIS News .

Dalley said, under the Charities Act passed in 2013, the JFJ could not be termed charitable in its current state.

Last year the Government rejected applications to have the JFJ's status as a charitable organisation renewed because the group has advocacy for legislative change as one of its objectives.

Chairman, Dr. Barry Wade, says that decision has left JFJ owing $11 million in back taxes as it is now liable to pay GCT and other statutory deductions.

However, Dalley says he will seek to have dialogue with the JFJ to understand its outstanding tax obligations.

He says Tax Administration Jamaica will also work with the organisation to ensure that it fulfills its obligations under the law.
