Education ministry to clamp down on scissors in schools

Published:Wednesday | July 15, 2015 | 4:05 PM

The Ministry of Education says steps are being taken to govern the use of scissors by high school students in and out of school.

Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, says the move is in response to a three-fold spike in the recovery of the item by school safety officers attached to the Safe Schools Programme.

Thwaites says seizures jumped from 122 in 2013 to 306 in 2014.

He says the increase is a concern for the education ministry.

Thwaites says on being held with scissors the students claimed that they are used for Home Economics classes.

The Education Minister says the ministry has stepped in to regulate the situation.
