Cunningham ... won gold for Jamaica in the men's discus on a rainy day in Toronto.

Jamaica's Paralympics poster boy, Alphanso Cunningham has won the country's first medal at the Paralympics Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada.

Cunningham won gold for Jamaica in the men's Discus F51/52/53/57 on a rainy day in Toronto.

Jamaica's other competitor today, Tevaughn Thomas, failed to make it into the final of men's T47 100 metres after finishing sixth in his semifinal in a personal best of 12 seconds.

Meanwhile, captain Tanto Campbell and Sylvia Grant will be the Jamaicans in action on Tuesday.

Campbell is down to compete in the F56/57 discus while Grant is down to contest the shot put event.

CORRECTION: This story had previously said Campbell won gold in the javelin. That was incorrect. The medal was actually won in the discus event.
