Suspected criminal doused with gasolene and burnt to death by mob in Haiti
PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti (CMC):
A man suspected of having criminal connections was burnt alive early today by a mob of men who were protesting against an upsurge in crime.
According to eyewitness reports, a group of men who took to the streets, stopped the unidentified man and asked if he knew anyone in the area.
The protestors reportedly placed tyres on the man, doused him with gasolene and set him on fire.
The charred corpse had a red handkerchief around the ankle, which is said to be a sign of association with wrongdoers – said an eyewitness.
The incident followed a series of home invasions here in recent weeks in which the victims were sexually assaulted.
“We cannot tolerate these acts – the public has no right to take justice into their own hands, people must return to their homes or else the police will force them to,” said police spokesman Frantz Lerebours.
