RX200T – F Sport: a Great synergy between luxury and sport

Published:Friday | November 11, 2016 | 12:00 AM

The Lexus RX series is currently in its fourth generation which was launched in September 2015, as a 2016 model. An aggressive styling in keeping with Lexus' current design language is used. Up front, the oversized spindle grill shows you that this car means business. The exterior lines are sharp and angular, and the end of the car is gracefully finished with a 'floating' roofline.

In contrast to the exterior, the cabin of this mid-sized SUV is finished with soft organic shapes and a host of premium materials. The leather is soft and inviting, combined with natural metallic tones - providing a luxurious atmosphere. The seats provide a commanding view, and visibility through the 'A' pillars are unobstructed. The instrument cluster has a large digital screen, providing vehicle information, as well as an analog tachometer.

Loaded with driver assistance aids and the largest head-up display in a production vehicle, the RX makes occupant safety a high priority. Our tester was finished in F-Sport trim which adds: drive mode selection, dynamic headlight levelling, F Sport interior and exterior styling package, panoramic moonroof with sliding roof, sequential LED indicators and many other creature comforts.

The RX200T is powered by a 2000cc turbo four-cylinder engine, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The engine is competent but not as powerful as we would have liked. The RX200T is two-wheel drive, however four-wheel drive is available on the RX350. The ride quality of the RX is superior; road and engine noises are muted in the cabin. The suspension does an excellent job of absorbing rough road surfaces and does not transmit this movement to passengers.

Lexus has always had a reputation of placing emphasis on smaller details. For example, the electric window speed is variable; starting quickly and slowing down gradually as the glass meets the door frame, giving a quiet and luxurious touch. The RX200T F-Sport provides a surprisingly competent package. This current RX has honed and refined qualities where previous generations fell short. We expect it to be one of Lexus' strongest selling models.
