Patrick Powell's gun case adjourned until Wednesday

The trial of businessman Patrick Powell for breaching the Firearms Act has been adjourned until tomorrow after his lawyer requested that the prosecution present two senior policemen to give evidence in the trial.

Defence attorney, Debra Martin, wants Assistant Commissioner of Police Ealan Powell and senior investigator Frank Buchanan to give evidence.

She made the request after the lead prosecutor Yanique Gardner Brown indicated that the prosecution did not intend to call ACP Powell as a witness.

The hearing was adjourned to allow the prosecution and the defence to have discussion on the matter.

The defence has indicated that if they fail to arrive at an agreement it will request a subpoena to have the policemen give evidence.

Gardner Brown has indicated that she intends to call five witnesses to help to make the case for the state.

Powell is charged with failing to turn over his licensed firearm to police investigators probing the shooting death of Kingston College student Khajeel Mais in 2011.

Powell was charged with Mais murder but was freed midway through his trial last October after prosecutors opted to offer no further evidence against him.

It happened after the main witness became uncooperative.
