Are your daily lifestyle choices setting you up for illness in later life? Are they impacting your life right now? It's never too late to start changing your lifestyle.

In an effort to sensitise and encourage persons to maintain good health, Body Forte, one of the island's leading physiotherapy and Pilates centres will be hosting 'The Polestar Experience' from November 17 to 18, 2017, at the University of Technology (UTech), St Andrew.

Polestar is an international authority in Pilates education, focused on whole body wellness, healing through movement modalities and mind-body-spirit connectivity. At the helm of Polestar is Dr Brent Anderson, a licensed physical therapist and certified orthopaedic specialist, who will conduct the two-day conference.

According to Summer Lopez, owner and operator of Body Forte, the aim is to influence the Jamaican community to live healthier and explore exciting possibilities in the paradigm of health and awareness.

"This experience will offer personal discovery, interactive discussions, observation, healing and experiential learning. It is specifically designed for those who are interested in making a difference," Lopez said.

"Body Forte is passionate about a healthier and more physically active Jamaica! We love to share knowledge and make a positive difference in people's lives. Hosting this event in Jamaica makes it accessible for everyone, both professionals and the general public. It is a great opportunity to learn from a different perspective," Lopez added.

HEALTH AND MOVEMENT

Polestar has been on the cutting edge of health and movement sciences since its inception in 1998. Anderson, founder of Polestar Pilates, will share his knowledge and experience in an intimate setting and will be delving into science-based techniques, intelligent movement and the uniform development of muscles, resulting in complete mastery of body and mind.

"Based on Anderson's extensive background in rehabilitation and movement science, he will work through the Polestar curriculum by developing tools for critical reasoning and applying supportive scientific research. He will also infuse the integral role of psychology and energy systems on motor control and motor learning," Lopez said.

The event's schedule of activities will include presentations on promoting health, discovering new individualised paths to happiness, health and peace, and is open to track and field coaches, athletes and athletic trainers, physical therapists and Pilates teachers.

"We have approached many schools to send their physical education coaches as part of their staff development and enrichment. There are so many concerned parents worried about the sedentary and technology-filled lifestyle of this up-and-coming generation. If we can get this into the school system, think of how many students could benefit," Lopez said.

Individuals and organisations are being encouraged to take advantage of the early-bird specials of US$180 for the two-day event. However, those interested in attending the conference on the Saturday only have the option of paying US$165.

"The idea is to enhance the way we treat movement and health and if we get professionals on board, then the positive effects will be that much greater, as they will be able to share with their clients. For instance, an athletic trainer working with a track and field sprinter would be able to take the valuable information and techniques from the 'The Truth About Running Injuries' workshop and apply it to the sprinter's programme," Lopez said.

Title sponsor of the event is Benjamin Manufacturing Company Limited and is endorsed by the Ministry of Health's Jamaica Moves campaign.
