US ban on powdered products in carry-on bags takes effective tomorrow
The Airport Authority of Jamaica is reminding persons travelling to the United States that the restriction on packages containing powders in carry-on bags entering the country takes effect tomorrow, Saturday, June 30.
The ban was imposed by the US's Transportation Security Administration.
The restriction applies to powdered and granular substances such as cosmetics, talcum powder, ground coffee, cake mixes, flour, drink mixes and spices 12 ounces or 340 grams or more.
These items must be packed in checked bags only.
Passengers will be checked for powdered substances in packages 12oz or 340 grams or more at the security screening checkpoint.
Items that are 12ounces or larger will not be allowed beyond the checkpoint.
Medically prescribed powder-like substances and baby formula 12 ounces or 340 grams or larger are exempted and may be transported in the cabin of the aircraft provided that sealed containers are inspected for signs of alteration or tampering to the packaging and containers that are unsealed are inspected to ensure the contents are consistent with the labels.
Passengers will still be able to purchase packages of powdered substance in the airport post security checkpoint.
However, passengers with connecting flights who purchase powdered substances after the security checkpoint must place the items in their checked bags at the point of connection prior to going through security or if the items are placed in Security Tamper-Evident Bags at the point of purchase, they may proceed with the item in their carry-on luggage.
