Young TT players in Dom Rep
Two young Jamaicans will be in the Dominican Republic on August 20 to attend a regional table tennis camp.
Nevaeh Scott of Portmore Missionary Preparatory School and Azizi Johnson of Jesse Ripol Primary School have made the trip with their coaches Richard Davidson and former national player Dale Parham.
Davidson, who coaches at the Angels Table Tennis Academy in Spanish Town, says Scott and Johnson stand to gain from the experience.
The camp runs from August 20 to 24 and ends with a qualifying tournament for another camp hosted in the same country by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). Having had two players attend what is known as the ITTF Hopes camp in the past, Davidson knows Scott will benefit from the experience.
"It's a vast experience for them", he recalled, "the confidence when they come back home is quite different, the discipline is also quite different because they're playing with players who are in a more structured programme than us and it takes something back with then to share with others when they come back to Jamaica."
Johnson, a member of the Supersonics Table Tennis Club, is Jamaica's under 11 champion, while Scott recently anchored her team to the Preparatory School team title.
The players and the coaches will remain in the Republic for the Caribbean Region Pre-Cadet and Junior Championships which will be held after the Hopes camps.
