Barrett hoping to motivate unbeaten CC

Assistant coach of Cornwall College (CC) Warren Barrett, who captained Jamaica's team to the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, said he is using his experience to motivate captain Shavon McFarlane and the team towards their goal of winning the 2018 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup.

Cornwall continued their perfect run in the competition yesterday, getting the better of Green Pond High School 2-1 at home, with Aiden Jokomba (57th) and Solano Birch (69th) getting the goals for the hosts. Simon Collins (65th) got the lone goal for Green Pond.

Barrett said because of his status, it is easier to get through to the players as they are more receptive to him.

"Yes, they do [respond] because that's the highest level of any player playing in a World Cup. The fact that they know that, and I have been around this team for a number of years, most of the players know me and my experience. They know that if I have played at that level and I am passing on information, it must be good," said Barrett.

"[It is] information that will help them to be better players ... . They grasp the information that myself, coach [Dean] Weatherly, and the other members of the technical staff is passing on. It has helped us to be unbeaten so far, and we are just hoping for the best for the rest of the season because the Cup isn't won after six games," he added.

Barrett said because of the youthfulness in the squad, it can be difficult to get the team to show maturity on the pitch, but he is looking to the captain and other senior players to be responsible.

"It's always a challenge when you are dealing with schoolboys ... . As the technical staff, we have to continue to encourage them and ask the senior players to shoulder the responsibility," said Barrett.

"Our relationship is good. I have known Dada-Dee for the past five years. I told him that this Cornwall team will go as far as he takes them. My relationship with all the boys is good. I like to see good, strong work ethic, so we push them as much as possible. When it comes to Interzone round, that's where the real competition starts," he added.
