The woman accused of abducting a newborn from the Victoria Jubilee Hospital in Kingston had been pregnant and passed off the child as her own when she returned to her hometown of Harkers Hall, relatives and acquaintances have told The Gleaner.

News of the suspect’s arrest and the subsequent confirmation that the baby she took home was indeed Sae’breon Hutton, who was snatched from the maternity hospital on January 9, has had tongues wagging in the small, hilly town, which is about 4km from Above Rocks in eastern St Catherine.

An uncle of the woman in custody, whose name cannot be published until she has been charged, told The Gleaner that he knows his niece is in hot water.

“Yes, I saw the baby and I told her I was glad. Mi say mi glad ‘cause yuh get yuh son,” he said.

The abduction suspect was taken into custody by the Central Village police after she turned up at the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) at Twickenham Park, St Catherine, last Tuesday to register the child’s birth. Discrepancies in her statements piqued the police’s interest.

The Gleaner understands that the woman in custody has been interviewed and will face an identification parade.
