Fire at Mandeville Parish Court, all cases for today adjourned

Cases scheduled for today at the Mandeville Parish Court have been adjourned following an early morning fire which damaged parts of the upper floor of the two-storey structure.

The initial assessment revealed that the damage was confined to a judge's chambers and its immediate precincts.

The Court Management Services said, the records office, located downstairs, was spared and may have only been affected by water that was being used to extinguish the upper floor.

Firefighters are now carrying out a detailed assessment of the overall damage to the Georgian-style building constructed in 1817 and Mayor of Mandeville Donovan Mitchell said they will be supported later today by fire investigators from Kingston.

Mitchell, speaking on Morning Agenda on Power 106FM, said police scene of crime personnel will also be probing the fire.

The cause of the early morning blaze has not yet been identified.

In the meantime, the Court Management Services said, people with matters scheduled for today should contact the court tomorrow for new hearing dates.

The Mandeville Parish court has been designated a national heritage site.
