Probe into murder-suicide Glock’s link to JDF armoury

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is investigating reports that the gun used in the murder-suicide that took place at a Four West home in Greater Portmore, St Catherine, on Sunday morning belonged to its armoury.
JDF Corporal Doran McKenzie, who worked at the Up Park Camp-based armoury, reportedly shot and killed his partner, Suianne Easy, before killing himself.
A source from the Jamaica Defence Force told The Gleaner that as an authorised employee in the armoury, where weapons are kept, it was likely that McKenzie was not checked before leaving.
The source further explained that military staff who work in the armoury, which is a sensitive unit of the JDF, undergo a rigorous vetting process in addition to the series of background checks to which regular members are subjected.
The armoury conducts strict record keeping, according to the source, entering the registration number of a weapon, magazine quantities, the name of the person receiving or returning the firearm, as well as the date and time.
Checks are done daily and sometimes twice daily, the source said.
It was reported that among the items removed from the crime scene was a Glock pistol similar to those used by the army.
Up to press time, JDF civil-military cooperation officer Major Basil Jarrett could not be reached for an update.
