Explosion at Burger King reportedly occurred after gas supplier gave the all-clear
The local Burger King franchise holder says the explosion at its New Kingston restaurant on Wednesday happened after concerns about fumes were raised with its gas supplier, checks were made and assurances given that it was "safe to proceed with business".
The franchisee, Restaurant Associates Limited, said in a media statement on Wednesday afternoon that following a routine delivery of gas supplies to the location, employees reported a strong odour of gas, which was subsequently reported to the service provider.
It says the restaurant was promptly closed to follow the proper protocol, and the service provider returned to the site to address the issue.
Restaurant Associates Limited's Group Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Lake, said before leaving the location, the supplier confirmed it was safe to proceed with business. She said shortly thereafter, there was an explosion.
Lake confirmed that there have been no fatalities. She said three of six employees showed visible signs of injuries and they were all were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment.
Restaurant Associates Limited said firefighters remain on location and it is cooperating with the authorities to facilitate a thorough investigation.
