Family of Burger King explosion victim seeking funds for urgent medical care
The family of Kerry-Ann Folkes, one of the victims of Wednesday's explosion at the Burger King outlet in New Kingston, is pleading for urgent financial assistance as they seek to have her transferred overseas for treatment of severe burn injuries.
Folkes is reported to be one of the most seriously affected of the six persons who were injured in the explosion.
Her sister, Renay Folkes Johnson, on Friday afternoon stated that the family has already made all the arrangements for her transfer, but funds are needed to pay for the air ambulance.
Folkes Johnson said the family is not pleased with how the matter is being handled by the local operators of Burger King.
She said while the local franchise holder has promised the family it will ensure Folkes gets the best care, time is of the essence and the family needs financial assistance now.
"We do not have the luxury of time to go through insurance policies and to go through and to prove that she is in need of care. Everyone is aware of the explosion and that speaks for itself...the family will not accept sub-optimal arrangements," she said.
She said while the family recognises that local doctors may have the expertise to take care of her sister, they are not convinced the facilities are in Jamaica to provide the best care.
"Her morale is deteriorating the longer she stays in this hospital (Kingston Public Hospital)," Folkes Johnson said.
She is urging Jamaicans and corporate Jamaica to help the family to have Folkes transferred overseas on Friday night.
